Welcome to the website of the League of Women Voters of Fluvanna County Virginia!
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, but never supports nor opposes any political party or candidates. It influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League of Women Voters was founded on Feb. 14, 1920 by suffragists who fought for voting rights for women, resulting in the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. Since the 1920's the League has grown and changed based on the needs of society and critical issues of concern. The League now includes men and women and remains rooted in its principles of democracy in action.
There are now hundreds of local Leagues nationwide - in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Hong Kong.
Believing that democracy works best when voters are informed, the League provides voter service by holding issue forums on topics of local interest, publishing Voters Guides (information on candidates at all levels of government and any other issues on the ballot), publishing Facts for Voters (information on voting and how to contact national, state and local officials), conducting monthly meetings open to the public with local officials and experts speaking on a variety of issues of local concern. The League also holds candidate forums where voters can, in one evening, hear all or most candidates make a statement and then be open to voter questions - a wonderful opportunity to get a sense of what the candidates stand for based on their own words.
The LWV addresses issues of concern in two ways - a longer term study which involves in-depth research over a year or more, and, consensus - in which a meeting is held where information is provided and then the group as a whole will either come to an agreement, or not, on the issue. The Fluvanna League recently conducted a study of the Rivanna River and its Watershed, took action by participating in state and national League studies and by contacting our local, state and national representatives. Each League studies an issue - local, state or national - and at the end of the study process, reaches a consensus. The League's position on an issue is based on these study results. For example, in early 2009 we held consensus on two issues - Restoration of Ex-Felon Civil Rights (a Virginia issue) and the National Popular Vote Compact (NPVC - a US issue). On the former, we agreed that Virginia, as one of only two states that does not grant at some point the automatic restoration of an ex-con's civil rights, should grant this upon the completion of certain requirements. This was the consensus statewide. On the NPVC we could not come to consensus. Again, at the national level, the majority of the leagues did not come to consensus on this issue.
We invite you to join us as we educate ourselves and the Fluvanna community on important issues and to participate with us in action and advocacy dedicated to improving our government and ensuring that democracy does work.
We hope you will find what you are looking for in this website. Feel free to contact us with your questions. If you are interested in our League, founded in December 1999, we welcome you and all in the Fluvanna County area to attend one of our meetings and get to know us. League general meetings are always open to the public. We meet usually on the second Monday of the month, from September through May, at 4:30 PM. Check our calendar for exact dates and location.
